 I purchased it at Wal-Mart for about $35.  I went to a fabric store and bought 4" thick urethane foam and cut pieces to fit bottom and 4 sides.   The foam cost about $25.  This is probably overkill for protection.  It might be too big to fit in a car but should be OK for an SUV or truck.
The bin is plenty strong enough and the right size to double as a bench seat. 
Some custom notching in the foam makes a good place to place the finder.

Yes, that is a dog's tail in the bottom of the picture.
